The practical side of living in Syosset: the parks, the commute, the schools, and the taxes and permits every owner deals with.
Parks and preserves
Stillwell Woods Preserve on South Woods Road covers 270 acres, with the Nassau-Suffolk Greenbelt Trail for hikers plus bicycle and equestrian trails. Fox Hollow Preserve on White Oak Tree Road is a 26-acre preserve for bird watching, and Robbins Lane Community Park has a turf field and a playground. Just over the line in Woodbury, the Town's 46-acre Syosset-Woodbury Community Park at 7800 Jericho Turnpike has a pool, an ice skating rink, tennis courts and ball fields.
Getting around
The Syosset station is on the LIRR's Port Jefferson Branch, at Jackson Avenue and Underhill Boulevard; check MTA schedules for trains to the city. By car, Jericho Turnpike (Route 25), the Long Island Expressway and the Northern State Parkway all run through Syosset, and the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway (Route 135) ends at Jericho Turnpike. The Syosset Public Library is at 225 South Oyster Bay Road.
Schools
Nearly all of Syosset is in the Syosset Central School District; a small northwestern corner is in the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Central School District. District lines don't follow hamlet, village or ZIP lines, so check the district for any specific address.
Taxes
The Town of Oyster Bay Receiver of Taxes collects county, town and school property taxes. General taxes are due in halves on January 1 and July 1 (payable without penalty through February 10 and August 10); school taxes are due October 1 and April 1 (through November 10 and May 10). See the Receiver's tax payment schedule. To challenge an assessment, file a grievance with Nassau County's Assessment Review Commission; the next filing window runs January 4 to March 1, 2027.
Permits
Syosset is unincorporated, so building permits and certificates of occupancy come from the Town of Oyster Bay Building Division, part of the Department of Planning and Development, at 74 Audrey Avenue in Oyster Bay. Check a home's permits and certificates of occupancy before you list or make an offer.
