The practical side of living in Dix Hills: the parks, the commute, the schools, and the taxes and permits every owner deals with.
Parks and landmarks
Dix Hills Park on Vanderbilt Parkway covers 152 acres, with the two indoor rinks of the Clark Gillies Arena, an outdoor Olympic-size pool open from late June through Labor Day weekend, and a nine-hole, par 31 golf course. Smaller Town parks include Otsego Park off Commack Road and Terry Farrell Park, formerly Wolf Hill Park, at Wolf Hill and Old Country Roads. The John Coltrane Home on Candlewood Path, where he wrote A Love Supreme, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. The Half Hollow Hills Community Library's Dix Hills branch is at 55 Vanderbilt Parkway.
Getting around
By car, the Long Island Expressway crosses the middle of Dix Hills, and the Northern State Parkway has exits at Deer Park Road (Exit 42) and Commack Road (Exit 43). There's no LIRR station in Dix Hills itself: the Huntington station on the Port Jefferson Branch is off New York Avenue in Huntington Station, and the Deer Park station is on the Ronkonkoma Branch. Check MTA schedules for trains to the city.
Schools
Most of Dix Hills is in the Half Hollow Hills Central School District, and a small southeastern portion is in the Commack School District. District lines don't follow hamlet or ZIP lines, so check the district for any specific address.
Taxes
The Town of Huntington Receiver of Taxes collects town, county and school property taxes from December 1 to May 31. The first half is due by January 10 and the second half by May 31; after May 31, unpaid taxes are paid to the Suffolk County Comptroller. To challenge an assessment, file a grievance with the Town of Huntington Assessor's Office by Grievance Day, the third Tuesday in May; the forms come out in April (see the grievance FAQ).
Permits
Dix Hills is unincorporated, so building permits and certificates of occupancy come from the Town of Huntington's Building & Housing Division, part of the Department of Engineering Services, in Town Hall (Room 115) at 100 Main Street, Huntington. Planning new construction or a large addition? Check the Town's filing requirements before you design.
