The practical side of living in Huntington: the parks, the harbor, the commute, the schools, and the taxes and permits every owner deals with.
Parks and the harbor
Heckscher Park, 18.5 acres between Main Street, Prime Avenue, Madison Street and Sabbath Day Path, has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1985, and the Heckscher Museum of Art sits inside it at 2 Prime Avenue. Near the head of Huntington Harbor, Mill Dam Park on Mill Dam Road is across from the Town's Mill Dam Marina and boat ramp, and Gold Star Battalion Beach is on West Shore Road. The Town sells seasonal resident beach and boat ramp permits; see the Town beaches page.
Getting around
The Huntington station on the LIRR's Port Jefferson Branch is off New York Avenue in Huntington Station, about 1.5 miles south of the village, and it's the eastern end of electric service on the branch; check MTA schedules. Route 25A runs east and west through the village, and Route 110 runs south to the Northern State Parkway and the Long Island Expressway.
Schools
Huntington is served by the Huntington Union Free School District, the Cold Spring Harbor Central School District and the Harborfields Central School District, depending on where you live. District lines don't follow hamlet or ZIP lines, so check the district for any specific address.
Taxes
The Town of Huntington Receiver of Taxes collects town, county and school property taxes from December 1 to May 31. The first half is due by January 10 and the second half by May 31; after May 31, unpaid taxes are paid to the Suffolk County Comptroller. To challenge an assessment, file a grievance with the Town of Huntington Assessor's Office by Grievance Day, the third Tuesday in May; the forms come out in April (see the grievance FAQ).
Permits, villages and flood zones
In unincorporated Huntington, building permits and certificates of occupancy come from the Town's Building & Housing Division at Town Hall, 100 Main Street. If a house is a designated landmark or in a historic district, ask the Town's Historic Preservation Commission about a Certificate of Approval before exterior work. The incorporated villages of Huntington Bay and Lloyd Harbor issue their own permits. Near the water, look up any address on FEMA's Flood Map Service Center. Most work in a tidal wetland or its adjacent area, which reaches up to 300 feet inland, needs a NYS DEC tidal wetlands permit; changing a dock's size or position is one example.
