The practical side of living in Melville: the parks, the commute, the schools, and the taxes and permits every owner deals with.
Parks and trails
West Hills County Park on Sweet Hollow Road has hiking and horseback riding trails, a dog park and picnic areas, and the Walt Whitman Trail climbs to Jayne's Hill, which the county lists at 400 feet as Long Island's highest peak. Town of Huntington parks in Melville include William E. Kessler Park on Sweet Hollow Road and Half Hollow Park on Old South Path. The Half Hollow Hills Community Library has a Melville branch at 510 Sweet Hollow Road.
Getting around
Route 110 meets the Long Island Expressway at Exit 49 and the Northern State Parkway at Exit 40. For the train, the Huntington station on the LIRR's Port Jefferson Branch is the closest with full service, and the Pinelawn station on the Ronkonkoma Branch has off-peak trains only; check MTA schedules. Suffolk County Transit's Route 1 bus runs along Route 110.
Schools
Melville is served by the Half Hollow Hills Central School District and the South Huntington Union Free School District, depending on where you live. District lines don't follow hamlet or ZIP lines, so check the district for any specific address.
Taxes
The Town of Huntington Receiver of Taxes collects town, county and school property taxes from December 1 to May 31. The first half is due by January 10 and the second half by May 31; after May 31, unpaid taxes are paid to the Suffolk County Comptroller. To challenge an assessment, file a grievance with the Town of Huntington Assessor's Office by Grievance Day, the third Tuesday in May; the forms come out in April (see the grievance FAQ).
Permits
Melville is unincorporated, so building permits and certificates of occupancy come from the Town of Huntington's Building & Housing Division, part of the Department of Engineering Services, in Town Hall (Room 115) at 100 Main Street, Huntington.
