The practical side of living in Cold Spring Harbor: the parks, the harbor, the commute, the schools, and the taxes and permits every owner deals with.
Parks, museums and the harbor
Cold Spring Harbor State Park at 95 Harbor Road covers 40 acres of hilly ground with views of the harbor, and it's the northern trailhead of the Nassau Suffolk Greenbelt Trail, which runs to Bethpage State Park. The Town's Cold Spring Harbor boat ramp, at Billy Joel Park, is on Route 25A. The Whaling Museum at 301 Main Street tells the story of one of Long Island's three whaling ports, and the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery and Aquarium on Route 25A was a state trout hatchery from 1883 until 1982. Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is just across the line in the Village of Laurel Hollow.
Getting around
The Cold Spring Harbor station on the LIRR's Port Jefferson Branch is on West Pulaski Road just south of Woodbury Road, in neighboring West Hills; check MTA schedules. Route 25A runs east to Huntington and west into Nassau County.
Schools
Cold Spring Harbor is served mainly by the Cold Spring Harbor Central School District, with parts in the Huntington Union Free School District. District lines don't follow hamlet or ZIP lines, so check the district for any specific address.
Taxes
The Town of Huntington Receiver of Taxes collects town, county and school property taxes from December 1 to May 31. The first half is due by January 10 and the second half by May 31; after May 31, unpaid taxes are paid to the Suffolk County Comptroller. To challenge an assessment, file a grievance with the Town of Huntington Assessor's Office by Grievance Day, the third Tuesday in May; the forms come out in April (see the grievance FAQ).
Permits, villages and the waterfront
In the hamlet, building permits and certificates of occupancy come from the Town of Huntington's Building & Housing Division at Town Hall, 100 Main Street, Huntington. Neighboring Lloyd Harbor and Laurel Hollow are incorporated villages with their own building departments, and Laurel Hollow is in the Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County. Near the water, look up any address on FEMA's Flood Map Service Center. Most work in a tidal wetland or its adjacent area, which reaches up to 300 feet inland, needs a NYS DEC tidal wetlands permit, including changes to a dock's size or position, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers may require its own permit.
