I grew up in Merrick, so this one is personal. Here's the practical side: the parks and the bay, getting around, schools, and the taxes and permits every owner deals with.
The bay and the parks
Norman J. Levy Park & Preserve at 1600 Merrick Road covers 52 acres on Merrick Bay, with a 500-foot fishing pier, a kayak launch and about three miles of trails. Merrick Road Park on Clubhouse Road has ball fields and tennis courts. The Merrick Library is at 2279 Merrick Avenue.
Getting around
Merrick's LIRR station is on the Babylon Branch, on Sunrise Highway between Hewlett and Merrick Avenues; check MTA schedules for trains to the city. The Meadowbrook State Parkway runs along Merrick's western side, with exits for Sunrise Highway and Merrick Road and a straight run south to Jones Beach.
Schools
Merrick is served by the Merrick and North Merrick elementary districts and the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District for grades 7 to 12. District lines don't follow hamlet or ZIP lines, so check the district for any specific address.
Taxes
The Town of Hempstead Receiver of Taxes collects school, county and town property taxes. General taxes are due in halves on January 1 and July 1 (payable without penalty through February 10 and August 10); school taxes are due October 1 and April 1 (through November 10 and May 10). See the tax payment schedule. To challenge an assessment, file a grievance with Nassau County's Assessment Review Commission; the next filing window runs January 4 to March 1, 2027.
Permits and flood zones
Building permits come from the Town of Hempstead Building Department. South of Merrick Road, flood zones can change from one block to the next, so look up any address on FEMA’s Flood Map Service Center before you make an offer.
Selling in Merrick
Over the three months ending September 2026, Merrick's median sale price was about $950,000, up 8.5% from a year earlier, and in September homes sold for 102.1% of list price on average (Redfin). Start with a free home valuation built on recent Merrick sales.
